From news services John Cunliffe scored twice to help Chivas USA climb back into sole possession of the Western Conference lead with a 3-2 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night in Salt Lake City. Paulo Nagamura added a long goal for Chivas (15-6-6, 51 points), which earned three points for the victory to break a tie with Houston in the standings. Chris Brown and Robbie Findley scored for last-place Salt Lake (5-14-9). Cunliffe, making his first start since July 4, took a low drive from Laurent Merlin and tapped it in with his thigh at the right post in the 22nd minute. Cunliffe scored again in the 54th minute when he raced on to a through ball from Sacha Kljestan and outpaced Ritchie Kotschau for his third goal of the season. Nagamura extended Chivas’ lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute when he ripped a 35-yard bomb that sailed over leaping goalkeeper Chris Seitz and just under the crossbar. Houston (14-7-6, 48 points) hosts the Galaxy (7-13-6, 27) today. FC Dallas 3, Crew 1: Abe Thompson scored two late goals to help FC Dallas wrap up an MLS playoff berth in Columbus, Ohio. Arturo Alvarez also scored for Dallas (13-11-4, 43). The loss put the Crew (7-11-10, 31) on the brink of missing the playoffs for the third straight year. Fire 2, Revolution 1: Chad Barrett scored the winning goal and had an assist for host Chicago (9-10-9, 36). Barrett scored in the 60th minute, beating Matt Reis after the goalkeeper blocked Paulo Wanchope’s shot. It was Barrett’s seventh goal of the season. Chris Rolfe tied it just before halftime off a pass from Barrett.New England is 14-7-7 (49).
