first_imgRed Hughs GAA News:Senior MenThe seniors travelled to Downings on Saturday evening on their second outing of the season. With a defeat at the hands of Burt last weekend they were hoping to get a victory this time out. The lads started well and were causing the Downings defence some problems in the opening minutes of the game.As the game went on both teams had chances and the home side were a bit more clinical in front of the nets aided by a strong breeze. With ten minutes to go in the first half the home side worked their way into the Reds box with some quick passing and found the back of the net. This was the score that separated the teams at the break. Half time Red Hugh’s 0-3 Downings 1-3The lads came out strong in the second half and took the game to the Downings men. They opened the scoring after 2 minutes but the home side struck back a minute later. It was a tight affair around the middle of the pitch where a lot of the play was taking place. A misplaced pass seen the ball landing in a Downings players arms and they broke at speed catching the Reds defence out of position and scored their second goal of the game. To their credit the lads never gave up and kept fighting until the final whistle. When the referee blew the final whistle there was three points between the sides Red Hugh’s 0-9 Downings 2-6 Although this was another defeat the lads can hold their head up high. They were the better team for long periods in the game but just need to be a little more clinical in front of the nets. With a home game next week V Naomh Colmcille they will be hoping to get their first victory of the season and if they can take their chances a victory will definitely be a high possibility.Best wishes to Ryan Kelly who again sustained a dislocated shoulder during the game. Hope to see him back soon.ReservesThe reserve lads also played Downings in the curtain raiser to the senior match. With a mixture of experience and youthful enthusiasm the lads were looking in confident manor taking to the pitch. The lads were matching the Downings men in the early encounters but seemed to drift out of the game in the later stage of the first half. Going in at the break it was Red Hugh’s 0-2 Downings 0-6The second half was a different story and the Reds took the game to the home side and piled on the pressure but it was also missed chances that the lads were going to rue when the ref blew the final whistle. The final score was Red Hugh’s 0-5 Downings 0-8The lads now play Naomh Colmcille at home next Sunday and will also be hungry for their first win of the season.
